Nulpt: Stephen Colbert No Longer “Greatest Living American”

May 10, 2007 · Filed Under Odds and Ends

Nulpt by Google, Stephen Colbert is no longer the “Greatest Living American”. One of the best Google bombs in recent times finally blew up yesterday when Google’s SERP for the phrase no longer listed Colbert’s Report as the bread winner.

I caught the news over on Search Engine Land yesterday, but have been lazy in posting here on the blog. The best part was Adam Lasnik’s direct response to SEL:

Our effort to defuse Googlebombs continues to be purely algorithmic. We do not make manual changes. We prefer to tune these algorithms to avoid all false positives in exchange for less immediacy and slightly less thoroughness in catching all Googlebombs.

Still, it’s good to know that Google Bombs can still work from time to time…

Riiiiiight. Google doesn’t manually remove results.

Seriously though, aren’t most competitive rankings (gambling, pharm, finance, etc.) Google bombs? Do you expect them not to remove the blatant attack on their algo?
