Yahoo Nulpts Semel; Yang In as CEO
What many have predicted for months appears to be coming true… Yahoo has nulpt CEO Terry Semel and will be replacing him with co-founder Jerry Yang. Alongside Yang, Sue Decker is expected to take seat as Yahoo! president.
Details on the exit are vague at this point, other than a couple of points. First, Semel seems to have “stepped down” from the position. After last week’s shareholder revolt though, I wonder just how much of his decision was based on choice. My bet is about 3%. I’m pretty sure the $71 million he had in options in 2006 were reason enough to retire…
The good news is that Jerry Yang seems to be the man for the job — not just an interim guy to hold the fort down. Like Yahoo, I believe that Yang gets search, and won’t invest heavily in entertainment like Semel did.
Yahoo has a chance to kick Google’s ass if they play their cards right. I just hope this wasn’t too little, too late.
